Altec Lansing 205A speakers vs. Stripmines, Madonna and others

Picked up a pair of Altec Lansing 205A’s for evaluation. The price was agreeable and they would seriously sound a terror in the shop.

The evaluation process has proven a tad robust though and caused the woofer spiders to partially separate from the frames. Not pleased, a minor pain to repair and a bit inconvienent right now. Ironic I was repairing another set of speakers suffering from the same issue. Chalked this one up as one more ” it sounded glorious as I heard it happen ” moment. Enthusiasts know the agony of defeat. It won’t be the last time and fortunately there was no voice coil bar-b-que.

I had ramped the session up quickly landing on select tracks from: Stevie Wonder – Talking Book, 10cc – The Original Sound Track, Gene Loves Jezebel – Kiss Of Life, Def Leppard – Hysteria, Steve Reich – Drumming, Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices And Organ & Six Voices, Eno & Byrne – My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, Garry Peacock – December Poems ( WOW !!!!!), The Road Warrior – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack & Yes – Going For The One.

By this point I had the volume at about 11 o’clock. I added a bit of twist for Stripmines – Crimes Of Dispassion and marveled at a thing of wonder. 12 o’clock is loud, clear and focused. Exceptionally loud is exactly how this record needs to be played.

Now that the critters were good and loose it was time to check the lows.
Woofer spiders, meet this copy of Madonna’s – Vogue 12″ that is a VERY hot pressing and effective, very effective.
Three minutes in the rattle presents. I curse and profess my love for the lady.
At least the separations are less than 2 inches each.

I had not even made it to Master Of Reality.
